Tree Roots Lifting Your Driveway: What You Can Actually Cut

The instinct is to cut the root and repour. Do that on the wrong root and you’ve traded a cracked driveway for a tree that fails in the next storm — onto the driveway.

Roots lift pavement because they grow in the top 6–18 inches of soil where oxygen and water are, and they expand in diameter as the tree grows. Whether you can safely cut a lifting root depends mostly on its diameter and distance from the trunk: small roots far from the trunk are generally survivable, while large buttress roots near the base are structural, and cutting them risks both tree health and stability. A common guideline is to stay outside a distance of several times the trunk's diameter and avoid severing roots larger than about two inches. Repair options that preserve the tree include root pruning with a barrier, flexible or segmented paving, ramping over the root, and rerouting the walk.

A root has lifted the driveway, the walk is a trip hazard, and there's an obvious fix sitting right there. Before you rent the saw, understand what that root is doing for the tree.

Why this happens

The mental image most people carry — roots as a mirror of the canopy, driving deep — is wrong. The functional root system is shallow and wide, concentrated in roughly the top 6 to 18 inches of soil, and frequently extending well beyond the drip line. That's where the oxygen is, and roots need oxygen.

Pavement makes that shallow zone more attractive, not less. Concrete and asphalt shed water to their edges and hold moisture underneath while shading the soil, so the interface just below a slab is often a favorable place to grow. Roots colonize it.

Then they thicken. A root doesn't shove upward with intent; it simply adds diameter every year, and something has to give. Concrete loses.

Which roots you can cut

Two variables decide it: diameter and distance from the trunk.

Buttress roots — the flared structural roots at the base — are anchorage. Cutting them compromises stability, full stop. The flare where trunk becomes root is the most important structural zone on the tree.

Distance is protective. Widely used arboricultural guidance keeps root cutting well away from the trunk, at a standoff measured in multiples of trunk diameter — the larger the tree, the further out you need to be. A rough working rule many arborists apply: avoid severing roots larger than about two inches in diameter, and keep excavation as far from the trunk as practical.

The delayed-failure problem is the real danger. Cut a significant root on one side and the tree may look completely healthy for years. Then a wind event loads it from the direction where anchorage was removed, and it goes over. Homeowners are genuinely baffled when a green, full tree fails — the cause was a trench dug three summers earlier. Two distinct risks, worth separating: decline (health, shows up gradually in the canopy) and instability (structure, shows up all at once).

Options that keep the tree and fix the surface

Ramp or bridge over the root. Build the walking surface up over the root rather than cutting down to it — a smooth transition in asphalt or a raised segment. Cheapest option, no root damage, though it changes the grade.

Reroute the path. Curve the walk around the root zone. Often the best long-term answer for a sidewalk that isn't load-bearing, and frequently cheaper than repeated repairs.

Segmented or flexible paving. Pavers, permeable pavers, or rubberized sidewalk sections flex and can be individually lifted and reset as roots grow, instead of cracking. Higher upfront cost, much lower lifetime cost where a tree is staying.

Root pruning with a barrier. Where a root genuinely must be cut, doing it properly means a clean cut at a defensible distance, ideally after an assessment of what percentage of the root system is affected, plus a root barrier to redirect future growth deeper or away. This is the option that most benefits from someone who knows what they're looking at.

Thicker or reinforced slab. Reinforcement over a prepared base buys years in the right situation, though it doesn't address the underlying growth.

Remove the tree. Sometimes correct — a poorly sited tree of a species that was never appropriate near hardscape, already causing repeat damage, is a defensible removal. Just make it a decision rather than a default, and confirm you're allowed to: check whether it's a right-of-way tree, whether it sits in a forest conservation easement, and in Columbia whether it's CA open space or needs village approval.

A note on grinding and removal

If the tree does come out, the roots don't leave with it. Stump grinding addresses the stump and major surface roots in the immediate area, but a mature root system extends far past the grinding zone and decays in place over years — which can cause its own settling under pavement. If you're repaving after a removal, it's worth grinding first and letting the ground settle before the pour.

Whose problem is it, anyway?

If the roots lifting your driveway belong to a neighbor's tree, Maryland's self-help rule applies to roots as it does to branches: you may generally cut roots that cross onto your property, at your own expense, provided you don't harm or destabilize the tree. That proviso does a lot of work — kill a neighbor's tree by over-cutting roots on your side and you've created a liability rather than solved a problem.
